Itinerary for Saturday July 19th, 10:30 am – 5:30 pm.
Panoramic Hill area:
10:30 am Meet at the parking lot of the Memorial Stadium ($1:00 parking for 2 hours at up hill meter). Above Bankroft at Prospect near Canyon Road. At 10:30+- We will proceed to the Orchard Lane steps at the base of Panoramic Hill. Up two sections of 39 steps we come to a foot path along Moss-wood Lane. We will walk to Moss-wood Road then along and down to Panoramic way returning to our cars.
Along the way will see houses by Frank Lloyed Wright, Bernard Maybeck, Julia Morgan, Coxhead & Coxhead, Walter Steilberg, Mabel Baird, John Hudson Thomas, Walter H. Ratcliff, and others. It is a slow gradual uphill walk after the steps and then level or down hill. (There are no handrails along Moss-wood lane you might wish to bring a walking stick)
Relocate Cars: (see point B on link to Google map)
11:30 AM. We will move our cars approximately 6 blocks down hill and park in the First Presbyterian Church Garage at 2420 Channing Way. (Max day fee $9:00 $1/20 min: for more info Contact Kathleen Hendley (925-933-8795)
11:45 Tour the Berkeley City Club: 2315 Durant Ave. Berkeley, Ca 95470 from 11:45- 12:45 (See Google map point C)
We will have a guided tour of the Berkeley City Club. It is one block north east of the First Presbyterian Church Garage.
1:00 -2:00 Lunch Break: We are a few blocks from Telegraph Avenue and Shattuck Ave. As you might find Telegraph Avenue (West) excessive we also recommend the following eateries on or near Shattuck to the east:
Venus-2327 Shattuck; Berger Meister- 3337 Shattuck; Angelines Kitchen– 2261 Shattuck; Razan’s Organic Kitchen– 2119 Kittredge;Smart Alec’s 2355 Telegraph ave. You might find a shady park or bench on campus to have a pick-nick.
2:00-3:15 First Church of Christ Scientist –tour:
After lunch at 2:00 We will meet at the First Church of Christ Scientist Bernard Maybeck’s Master piece and the only building in Berkeley on the National Historic Register. It is at the east end of Peoples Park 2619 Dwight Way. We will have a private tour.
3:15-4:30 Tentative tour the Baptist Seminary By Julia Morgan (just across the Street from the Maybeck Church)
4:30-5:30 South of Campus to Willard Park
Between 4:30 & 5:30 we will tour about the Willard Park area. Perhaps as far south as Derby. (this will depend on our stamina-)
Our tour will end at approximately 5:30 pm near the Elmwood District south on College near Ashby where you might wish to have reservations for dinner.
We also recommend over night accommodations at the Berkeley City Club and/or dinner at Julia’s in the BCC ((Reservations 510) 848-7800).
You should reserve a room ASAP as the are limited parking at the club $20.00/ night.
